Aim & Background

A workshop-style course in which students examine the use of video in policy advocacy, culminating in the production of a short advocacy video working in small groups. Aided by the spread in low-cost, high-quality technologies, and the role of a variety of social media platforms for dissemination, strategic use of video is fundamental in most advocacy strategies. It's not easy to be heard in a sea of information and messages--this is why video advocacy, when used wisely, can be an invaluable ally in campaigns and policy advocacy work. In this course, we will explore a range of advocacy tactics and strategies, and critically examine different campaigns. Students will be encouraged to consider audience, outreach, and amplification, as well as the strategic use of social media, traditional press and community outlets. We will consider the use of video in documenting human rights violations and protest movements, and in . This course also includes a practical component to provide students with basic grounding in video production and editing. In concert with analysis of existing campaigns and theories of social change, students learn to construct an advocacy video that communicates a message, moves an audience, and can ultimately effect change on a given issue. Students have the option to either use their phones to film their video, or the CEU's Mirabaud Media Lab's state of the art equipment. Either way, no prior experience in video production is required for the course. Class sessions will combine lecture and discussion of relevant concepts; viewing and analysis of advocacy videos; hands-on technical instruction of basic video production and editing; and peer-to-peer feedback of student projects at each stage of completion.MPA students are required to complete 10 credits for Skills for Impact (SFI) modules (includes the mandatory 1-credit SFI module offered during Zero Week) across the 2 years of the program.
