Aim & Background

This course explores the evolving dynamics of Roma identity and leadership within the broader context of European societies. Designed for graduate students preparing for academic, policy, advocacy, or community-based work, the course centers on how Roma individuals and communities engage with issues of representation, cultural identity, activism, and leadership.Students will engage critically with historical narratives, social and political challenges, and contemporary movements shaping Roma experiences across Europe. Through readings, guest speakers, discussions, and collaborative activities, participants will gain a nuanced understanding of how Roma leaders-formal and informal-are challenging stereotypes, navigating systems of marginalization, and redefining participation in civic and political life.
