Aim & Background

This seminar introduces students to the process of conducting scientific research. It is designed to lay the foundations of good empirical research in the social sciences and beyond. It explains the importance of scientific research, the different types of research, research methods, and how to prepare research documents. Students become acquainted with a variety of approaches to research design, and learn to evaluate other empirical research. Ultimately, this seminar guides students towards developpling their own research proposal - possibly for their own thesis.The seminar features lectures on research methodology and a venue to rehearse research ideas in various formats (e.g., unconference, elevator pitch, visualization, progress reports); it offers guidelines and participatory sessions in which students choose their research topic, engage in peer reviews, and polish their thesis proposal; and supports students in developing attractive presentations of their research ideas.THIS SEMINAR HELPS YOU PREPARE A RESEARCH QUESTIONS THAT COULD BE USED FOR YOUR THESIS BUT YOU DO NOT NEED TO USE THE SEMINAR'S OUTCOME FOR YOUR THESIS (BUT YOU COULD).
