Aim & Background

In this course, we will cover some of the main topics in Ancient Greek Metaphysics and Epistemology by means of a close reading of key texts by Plato and Aristotle. Topics to be discussed include: Plato's conception of knowledge, the difference between knowledge, perception, and true belief, Aristotle's conception of philosophy as wisdom, Aristotle's conception of ontology and its relationship to other sciences, the role of principles within an Aristotelian science, his argument that PNC is the firmest of all principles, Aristotle's treatment of Protagorean relativism and Heraclitean flux theories. Throughout the course, we will discuss how the themes introduced by Plato and Aristotle developed in subsequent periods and in contemporary metaphysics and epistemology
