Aim & Background

This 4-credit course is designed to familiarize students with some of the most commonly used methods of qualitative social science research in Gender Studies through a focus on ethnographic methods and sensibility. The course introduces students to the skills they will need to formulate research questions, carry out the research, collect, analyze, and write up data for their MA or PhD theses. Conceptual and practical components focus on two main methods: interviewing and participant observation, as core elements of the ethnographic toolkit, with time spent also on other methods, including online ethnography, oral history, visual methods, walking interviews, and others. Interwoven throughout the course are considerations of ethics, positionality, emotions, self-care, and debates about feminist and participatory methods. Class discussion will allow students to explore the implications of different research choices and to learn from the first-hand experience of others. Attention is also paid to the analysis of qualitative data (coding and other strategies) and the principles of ethnographic writing. Excerpts of published ethnographies will be read and discussed in terms of how the written word conveys research findings and the author's positionality. Students are expected to work through practical assignments and the final essay using their planned thesis topics or a close anticipation thereof. PhD students are assessed against higher expectations and are required to present their work in class and submit an additional written assignment at the end of the semester. This course fulfills the research methods requirements for all Gender Studies MA and PhD programs; GEMMA students may take it as an elective. Students from other departments may be admitted depending on space and after consultation with the instructor. The course is not open to BA students.
