Aim & Background

The purpose of the course is to give a scholarly overview to the modern political ideologies, and their chief exponents, the intellectuals. The course starts off with the concept of ideology itself, in both historical and post-Cold War context, and comparing it to other forms of discourses. Then, three major approaches to intellectuals (classic, new class, and contemporary) will be discussed. In the larger part of the course we examine major ideologies in a way to cover both theoretical considerations and the impact of these ideas. The course aim to put ideologies into the context of politics. Beside some 'classic' ideologies (liberalism, conservatism, socialism, anarchism, fascism etc.) we will discuss some 'new' ideologies, that have risen during the 20th century. The course also discusses some of the main debates on ideology.
