Aim & Background

The history of the modern Middle East is one of the most intriguing and contentious subjects of study, especially in light of recent American interventions throughout the Islamic world alongside its backing of Israel's policies vis-à-vis Palestinians. This class seeks to examine this contentious history from the late Ottoman period to the present day to expose the main issues and debates relevant to this region during the last two centuries. The class will examine how the Ottoman Empire managed its diverse peoples in the Middle East, how Western European empires undermined Ottoman authority in the Islamic world, and how the power vacuum left after the fall of the Ottoman Empire directly impacted many of the struggles that still make the headlines today.
