https://at-ceu.studyguide.timeedit.net/modules/DOPP5448?type=COREMixed methods research designs are becoming increasingly important for public policy research. Mixed methods make it possible to combine the respective strengths of quantitative and qualitative research. While qualitative studies are rich in empirical material and depth, they often lack the ability to generalise their findings. Quantitative studies, on the other hand, are excellent at producing generalisable results, but often at the cost of a lack of empirical depth and conceptual depth. A well-designed mixed methods design should be able to overcome the weaknesses of both approaches and combine the strengths. In this course, we will therefore discuss the prerequisites for combining different research strategies and then look at different mixed methods designs. We will then cover four qualitative methods for data gathering and two methods of qualitative data analysis that can be well integrated into a mixed method design. In the final part we will discuss ethical issues and have a group work session where participants will work on their own mixed methods research design.Part of the Quantitative Policy Analysis specialization for MAPP and MPAPart of both the Democracy and the Policy track courses for MAIPA
