Aim & Background

Project management is a vital skill that touches every aspect of our lives, from managing research, writing a thesis, and organizing cultural events to personal projects like planning family gatherings or travel adventures. Leading Cultural Events and Heritage Projects: From Vision to Implementation is a dynamic course designed to equip students with the knowledge and tools to manage projects and events effectively. Whether you are interested in museums, history, the arts, game development, or more, this course prepares you to become a proactive actor and future leader in cultural project management. This term, we will focus on creating and organizing the vibrant non-academic activities of the COMMA Summer University. This unique program, Communicating in the Middle Ages, brings together students and faculty from four partner institutions - Háskóli Íslands in Iceland, Univerzita Karlova in the Czech Republic, CEU, and Syddansk Universitet in Denmark - for an exploration of medieval life and its ongoing relevance to Europe today. Your task is to dream big and brainstorm innovative ideas for the Summer University's non-academic program. Whether it is organizing an exhibition, hosting a concert at CEU or nearby, collaborating with VR creators and game designers to showcase new experiences, or highlighting Vienna's exciting historical sites and stories to invite international students to experience the city's rich cultural heritage beyond the classroom, your creativity will shape a colorful and unforgettable program for all participants. Throughout the semester, we will cover key project management steps from initiation to execution, focusing on the unique needs of cultural projects. Through lectures and workshops, you will learn about cultural research, mission-driven concept creation, planning, budgeting, and scheduling. Building on this foundation, you will gain hands-on experience by organizing and communicating the activities around the COMMA Summer University (5-11 June, 2025), developing your skills in designing, coordinating, and delivering engaging events. Cultural event planning and organizing often bring unexpected challenges. You will learn to navigate these with adaptability, innovation, and leadership while mastering teamwork, collaboration, and overcoming obstacles to achieve shared goals.
