https://at-ceu.studyguide.timeedit.net/modules/HISU5038?type=COREPlease note: Source Language courses have their first class in the week of September 29Latin Intermediate is open to all students whose level is above Beginner, i.e., who have completed two semesters of Latin at the CEU (Latin Beginner I & II) or, alternatively, who have already mastered most of Latin morphology and have at least a basic knowledge of syntax, and who would like to improve their skills in reading and interpreting Classical and post-classical Latin. This course is designed as a logical continuation of the two-semester course offered under the title Beginner Latin, which offered a basic coverage of Latin morphology. The main aim of the present course is to continue the systematic overview of Latin morphology and offer basic notions of syntax. By the end of the semester the overview of the nominal, pronominal and verbal morphology will be completed, adding to the forms already taught the following: the consonant, -i, -u, and -e nominal stems, the degrees of comparison of adjectives and adverbs, the tenses of the perfectum, and the pronouns. In addition to this, the course will also include a survey of the various indeclinable words, such as adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions with their uses with various cases. All throughout the semester special attention will be paid to specific grammatical and lexical features of post-classical Latin. All the grammar points discussed in class will be illustrated with concrete examples (both isolated sentences and coherent textualexcerpts taken from classical, late antique, and medieval authors) chosen by the instructor; these will be translated in class or as individual assignments, followed by discussion in class. In an effort to provide students with access to "living Latin" as a testimony and expression of everyday life in the Roman Empire, a selection of wall inscriptions and graffiti, with a special focus on epigraphic material surviving from Pompeii and Herculaneum, will be included progressively in the translation practice material. In addition to the theoretical lectures covering various issues of grammatical and lexical issues, the in-class practice will ensure a thorough and interactive discussion of the information provided during the lectures and opportunities for practicing on concrete examples the grammar points discussed as well as give the students the possibility to offer and receive feedback in connection with the topics discussed. All readings will all be provided in their original form, i.e., without any simplification, but accompanied with relevant notes and commentary. All throughout the semester, the translation of the texts will be accompanied by a detailed linguistic commentary meant to identify the specifically postclassical features of the language as well as by a cultural introduction meant to place the readings in their intellectual context so as to foster their better understanding. With the help of the resources provided by the CEU e-learning website, students will also be given the possibility to practice and assess their knowledge of Latin periodically by means of on-line quizzes and tests. The course will be taught on site and attendance in person is expected.
