https://at-ceu.studyguide.timeedit.net/modules/HISU5036?type=COREPlease note: Source Language courses have their first class in the week of September 29This course is open to all students who have no or minimal previous knowledge of Latin. The course, planned to cover two semesters, is intended to equip the students with a basic knowledge of Classical and Medieval Latin, especially its morphology, so as to enable them to handle by the end of the year, at lower intermediate level, source material of minimal complexity in that language.By the end of the semester the overview of the nominal morphology will cover the inflection of the a- and o/e- nominal stems (i.e., in traditional terminology, the first two declensions); the overview of the verbal morphology will cover the three tenses (praeteritum, praesens, futurum) of the imperfectum stem in all the conjugations and the corresponding passive forms as well as verbal forms such as the imperative and the infinitive. Adjectives as well as basic pronouns will also be taught. In addition to this, the course will include a survey of various indeclinable words, such as adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions and their uses with various cases. All throughout the semester special attention will be paid to specific grammatical and lexical features of post-classical Latin. All the grammar points discussed in class will be illustrated with concrete examples (both isolated sentences and more extensive texts, all original, i.e., not simplified/invented by modern scholars) chosen by the instructor; these will be translated either in class or at home as individual assignments, followed by discussion in class (within the limits of the time available according to the class schedule). For further consultations, students are encouraged to schedule individual appointments during the instructor's weekly office hours. In addition to the theoretical introductions covering various grammatical and lexical issues a series of revision on-line exercises will ensure a thorough and interactive assimilation of the information provided during the lectures and through the distributed handouts. With the help of the resources of the CEU e-learning website, students will also be given the possibility to practice and assess their knowledge of Latin periodically by means of on-line quizzes and tests, meant to supplement the relatively reduced in-class contact time. The course will be taught on site and attendance in person is expected.
