Aim & Background

This course (autumn semester) material is highly selective. It does not aim to provide a comprehensive or overarching and exhaustive presentation of the main issues and concepts, or schools of thought of the discipline. The goals of this course rather is to to lay the foundation for and/or deepen students' understanding depending on students' prior training, and to give them a clear sense through carefully selected practices of how extended research is conducted highlighting the importance of writing (up). In addition, students are going to further develop their written argumentation/analytical skills and critical thinking, and also their oral and presentation skills. Students who take this course learn how to do research, how to approach, how to think about a question, a puzzle, how to write about the questions, issues that are the basis of their research, that they wish to understand and elucidate in their research. By the end of the academic year students are required to write a thesis. The work throughout the year is conducted with this goal in mind as well. The syllabus is going to be designed in a way that students' current level, preparedness, and the themes they wish to reflect on are carefully addressed. This also means that the readings, or the pace of reading them may change depending on the challenges encountered by the students.Given the approaching MA application deadline the first month prior to this date is also dedicated to helping students submit a convincing application package, specifically the research proposal and the written sample.During the semester students are required to write a midterm paper (1000-1500 words, by Date to be clarified ), and a final paper (2000-3000 words, by Date to be clarified).
