Students will learn about the fundamental logic of constructing QSS research projects, understanding the importance of identifying research questions connected to research problems, and the way in which data can help answer these questions with rigor and impact. We will review key methods of data collection and analysis, as well as best practices in communicating findings. We will also discuss practical and ethical challenges in QSS, as well as challenges in interdisciplinary dialog and critique in this dynamic field. This course will showcase specialization tracks at this early stage in the curriculum, to orient students as they choose their track and courses for the second year. The course will feature guest lecturers from all tracks of the program, presenting key topics and research directions in quantitative social sciences, in the fields of Sociology, Economics, Environmental Science, Political Sciences, and Data Science.
