Aim & Background

This course provides participants with a basic understanding of law, legal principles, and the legal system. It is divided into two parts. The first part explores a number of general issues including the meaning of 'law', sources of law, basic legal concepts, and the distinction between common law and civil law legal systems. The second part discusses some of the most fundamental areas of law including constitutional law, administrative law, contract law, tort law, procedural law, and international law. It also deals with legal interpretation and the overarching issue of the meaning and significance of the rule of law. The course is both practical (i.e., it will allow participants to be able to analyse and solve concrete real-world legal issues) and theoretical (it will notably highlight various scholarly debates surrounding given legal issues and/or concepts).The goal of the course is to equip the participants with the knowledge and analytical skills necessary to identify, understand, and assess a variety of legal issues that arise in connection with economic, cultural, social, and technological realities and occurrences.
