Aim & Background

This course takes us on a journey to explore the key points of the dynamic histories of East Asia, with a specific focus on Japan, China, and Korea. The course offers a foundation for further studies by providing an institutional and cultural historical basis. Throughout the sessions, we will put particular focus on the critical analysis and contextualization of diverse historical phenomena, figures, and events, consistently complementing these with an interdisciplinary approach to connect historical inquiry with other fields. A further specialty of the course constitutes its simulatenous engagement with the three focus areas by investigating them in parallel, thereby facilitating the detection and understanding of connections, exchanges, and potential mutual influences.
