https://at-ceu.studyguide.timeedit.net/modules/DNDS6014?type=COREThe increasing availability of digital data sources and the growing power of computers have stimulated new research on social processes in the social sciences and related disciplines. Computational social science (CSS) is a field currently developing at the intersections of computer science, sociology, political science, economics, and physics. The course offers students an initial insight into this research area and discusses the types of data, theories, and methods used by CSS. Topics studied by CSS include the large-scale structure of society, multi-scale dynamics of human mobility, social contagion, filtering fake news and identifying echo chambers, urban dynamics and well-being in cities, and many more. The new challenges brought by using Big Data in social sciences require new methods and multi-disciplinary effort. Techniques like data mining and processing, agent-based modelling and online experiments, statistical evaluation and theoretical analysis are equally part of it. The goal of the course is to give an introduction to this new, emergent field and discuss differences and similarities with traditional quantitative social science.
