Aim & Background

How do digital technologies transform capitalism, state-market relations, international companies, trade, and finance? How do they shape social interactions, the working of institutions, the production of social practices and beliefs, and the pursuit of profit? What are the theoretical, methodological and normative implications of technological change for the practice of social scientific knowledge of the economy? In this course, we will first make a few observations about the different conceptualizations of the transformation of capitalism such as platform economy. Equipped with these insights we turn to study the specific platforms with special attention on Amazon and Uber. Next, we study the role of data and the role of algorithmic governance for the functioning of the market. Then we turn to study the transformation of finance as studying blockchain technologies and fintech in development. We then take a closer look at the transformation of small states willing to harness the digital economy. We finish with an evaluation of the GDPR regulation in the European Union. During the last week we watch a great Romanian movie and give feedback and say goodbye.
