    Aim & Background

This course will provide a broad understanding of the foundations of international finance.Content. We will begin with the fundamentals of international economics, such as the balance of payments and exchange rate regimes. Students will become familiar with the concepts of import and export, the trade balance, the current account balance, the financial account balance, and the role of central banks. Different exchange rate regimes are covered, ranging from fixed (or pegged) to floating exchange rates. This is followed by the basics of how currency markets work, both spot markets and forward markets. We will learn how you can use financial instruments for speculation, arbitrage, and hedging. We cover major driving forces of exchange rates, especially the concepts of purchasing power parity and interest rate parity.Additional topics may be covered if time permits, such as an introduction to foreign exchange risk management. However, it should be noted that this is a short six-week course, which means that we will not have time to dig deep into advanced topics such as advanced foreign exchange risk management, international capital markets, international portfolio management, or international cost of capital and M&A. However, this course is a great complement to the course Corporate Finance and Risk Management, which covers the topic of risk management in detail. Also, we will use coding exercises with real-world datasets to strengthen your skills in coding and analytics. Coding experience is not required for this course. Please note that the Course Description is preliminary and might be updated during the semester if necessary.
