Aim & Background

Intellectual Property (IP) is everywhere: in the component parts of your smartphone, in the videos you watch on YouTube, and in the label of your favorite soft drink. Everywhere we look, there are patented inventions, copyrighted works, trademarked signs, geographic indications of origin and other forms of IP. Designed to create incentives for innovation through the award of exclusive rights, IP regimes provide right holders with the legal mechanisms to protect their intellectual creations. Furthermore, as technology evolves new questions in the field of IP arise. Given the increased economic importance of data, for example, we will dedicate some time to the question as to whether IP protection is or should be available for data in different circumstances. This year's edition will contain a new educational experiment (after the previous Minecraft experiment in the 2022/2023 edition of the course): given that virtual reality is something that will be increasingly present in our private and work lives, we will explore during one double-session which kind of IP questions arise in these alternative environments. We will make use of a VR set to explore a virtual world.
