https://at-ceu.studyguide.timeedit.net/modules/NATI5146?type=COREParticipants of the course will get a hands-on training in research design and implementation in preparation for their thesis research and other research projects. Importantly, students will have a chance to develop their own projects and receive support in all steps of the completion of their qualitative fieldwork, including: choice of research method, research design, data collection, research ethics, data analysis, and presentation of findings. The course will be a combination of different types of classes: seminar-style, workshops, and individual/small group consultations. Furthermore, students will get a training in using qualitative research software MAXQDA or NVivo upon availability. The two-credit course will consist of four main modules. In the first module, after a general introduction, students, focusing on their own planned studies, will learn the basics of research design and fieldwork planning. By the end of this block, students will prepare a first draft of their research plan and discuss it with the group. The second block will zoom in on two different face-to-face qualitative data collection methods: interviews and group discussions (online and in-person), preparing all students for setting up their interview guides and starting the data collection. By the end of this block, students will have conducted their first interview or group discussion. In the third block, we will learn to conduct qualitative content analysis, creating coding schemes and preparing the data for analysis. In the final, fourth block, we will discuss how the collected data can be presented in a meaningful way in the thesis and in other academic and non-academic outlets. Students who are not writing a thesis this year, but would like to learn about qualitative fieldwork, are also welcome to join the course and can bring their own project idea, or can be matched with research requests from a local NGO and will interview residents of Favoriten (in collaboration with CEU's Science for Society Hub).
