Aim & Background

The prevailing global economic model, characterised by 'Make. Use. Throw.', generates significant negative social and environmental consequences, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. This course introduces the circular economy as an alternative model designed to mitigate these issues by reducing waste and pollution through emulation of natural principles like carrying capacity and symbiosis. The circular economy transforms waste into a resource and internalises externalities. As an interdisciplinary concept spanning natural and social sciences, this course will analyse its three core principles: 1) eliminate waste and pollution, 2) circulate products and materials, and 3) regenerate nature. Students will learn how these principles can be applied to develop a regenerative rather than exploitative economic model. Key sectors to be analysed include agriculture/food, packaging materials, the built environment, textiles, and mobility. Concepts will be illustrated and supported through case studies and numerous real-life examples. The course emphasises active discussions and debates, encouraging students to present and share their interpretations of assigned readings.
