Aim & Background

The goal of this course is to 1) introduce you to grant writing and 2) help you develop your skills in writing persuasive proposals in English. The purpose of learning about grant writing is to increase your chances of obtaining funding for projects that you would like to implement. This is quite different from what is expected in academic writing, but the principles of good writing, such as clear language and not engaging in plagiarism, apply.Project proposals can be submitted to grant-making organisations, such as governments, private donors, academic institutions, trusts or foundations. This course will teach you how to develop and write a proposal that fulfils the requirements and expectations of standard EU grants. The skills you acquire, however, will be useful in writing grants for other types of donors too. This course focuses on creating small grant proposals in collaboration with civil society organisations based in Vienna. You will learn how to write proposals and have the opportunity to write a real grant for a partner organisation to use in an actual submission. In this way, the course enables you to work towards goals that benefit both your educational experience and a real need in society. If you would like to write your own proposal, you must already have a confirmed partner who has identified an issue, topic, or challenge that could be solved by the proposal. If so, please consult the instructor before the first class. This academic year, we will work in collaboration with these two NGOs: CONCORDIA Social Projects Austria | Help for children in need and Willkommen bei der Männerberatung Wien - Männerberatung Wien. While this is not the main focus of the course, some of the skills you will learn could also be useful for writing research grants in the future, especially those written as a team.During the course, you will 1) be introduced to and familiarized with the standard EU grant formats; 2) improve your English writing skills in grant writing; 3) critically evaluate the expectations of the readers (who are the people who will judge the quality of your proposal); 4) develop understanding and skills in partnership building; 5) learn the potential challenges and pitfalls in proposal writing and ways to overcome them; 5) have the opportunity to immediately apply the acquired knowledge and skills in actual grant writing; and 6) learn to work and write in a team.
