Aim & Background

COURSE DESCRIPTIONIn this course you will embark on a journey studying the complexities of law & governance in the globalized world of the 21st century. From a law-and-society perspective, we will examine the role of law and governance within a broader framework of interacting norms generated and utilised by multiple state and 'non-state' actors, spanning from the local to the global level. For this journey, you will be equipped with key terms, concepts and methodological tools. They include fundamental concepts of law, governance, state(hood), globalisation and sovereignty. These tools will enable us to discuss the intersections of state law and 'non-state' law, different legal cultures in the 'Global North' and 'Global South', and the lasting effects of (neo)colonialism. Throughout our exploration, we will gain insights into how law and governance work in practice, with a particular focus on topics such as human rights, global peace governance, and global climate and environmental governance. We will reflect on the concept of planetary boundaries and the notion of planetary governance. In a role play we will experience the complex negotiations of law and governance in an interconnected world.
