Aim & Background

How does the global movement of people, goods, ideas, and capital impact worlds of work? This anthropology course examines the relationship between globalization and labor through a series of ethnographic case studies from around the world. Each week, we explore a different sector of work, from plantations and shipping to sex work and finance. The course places particular emphasis on how global inequalities-based on factors such as gender, class, ethnicity, and citizenship-differently impact workers' lives. Through the diversity of case studies, students will learn about the experiences of people whose lives may be very different from their own.
