Aim & Background

This course explores the profound and intricate relationships between human-driven global environmental changes and their consequences for human health and well-being. Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, we will delve into foundational concepts of environmental health policy and examine specific environmental health risks, including those related to water and air pollution. The curriculum will also address the health impacts of climate change, explore the complexities of risk perception and communication, and highlight the disproportionate vulnerabilities of certain populations. Furthermore, the course will investigate the critical role of food systems in environmental health and consider collaborative approaches, such as citizen science, in addressing these challenges. By analysing environmental health at both national and international levels, and through compelling case studies, students will identify significant challenges and explore potential solutions, including nature-based approaches. The course culminates in a dynamic simulation game on global negotiations concerning mercury contamination, providing a practical experience in collective action for managing complex environmental risks. The overall aim of this course is to equip students with an interdisciplinary understanding of the drivers, health impacts, and policy responses to global environmental change, fostering their ability to critically analyze environmental health risks, evaluate diverse policy solutions (including those for food systems), and appreciate the vital role of collaborative and international action in safeguarding human and planetary health.
