Aim & Background

This course is designed in part to support doctoral students at CEU completing their first teaching practicum, teaching assistantship (TA), or instructorship. As a course participant, you will both learn practical skills commonly needed in teaching roles at CEU and join a community of other early-career educators. In this spirit, the course helps you navigate many of the immediate challenges of the role, such as exploring institutionalized (and sometimes non-institutionalized) expectations and challenges of being a TA or doctoral student instructor and how to manage them, how to grade and provide actionable feedback, how to use Moodle and classroom technology effectively, how to lead discussions, how to contribute to accessible and inclusive learning environments, how to effectively manage classroom dynamics, and how to make the most of the TA-ship, practicum, or teaching as a developmental experience. At the same time, this is also designed as a course, independent of your TA-ship or practicum, and as a complement to it, rather than as an extension. Teaching and TA-ships vary considerably, not least by subject. You also may not be able to take this course in the same term as your TA-ship, though we highly encourage you to do so when possible. Importantly, some of the topics or approaches we explore in this course may not be directly relevant to your immediate experience. At the Yehuda Elkana Center, we also believe there's value in going beyond the practical experiences you're acquiring, not just by putting them into dialogue with the scholarship on teaching or your peers' experiences - though this is part of the course - but also by exploring topics and approaches that we believe have value in your development as teacher in higher education beyond the immediate present. Finally, this course also serves as one of the required courses in the Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education (along with Foundations and Learning by Design). Our hope is that by taking this course, you will not only have a better practical experience in your TA-ship or other hands-on teaching experience at CEU, but that (in conjunction with the other courses of the Certificate program) you will be well on your way to a comprehensive footing as a teacher in higher education.
