https://at-ceu.studyguide.timeedit.net/modules/GENS5073?type=COREThis course explores humanity's relationships with the non/human - both non-human others (such as animals, plants, and machines) and the others within the human (such as infra-humans and the inhumanity of humans) as a dynamic site for feminist and queer engagements. We will begin with critiques on the figure of the (white, heterosexual, middle-class, and able-bodied) 'man' as the universal human subject that positions himself at the top-end of the evolutionary path. Having obtained a critical perspective on the construction of human proper and its value systems, we will then explore the political and epistemological issues in humans' engagements with animals, machines, things, and environments. In this, we'll pay attention to how these issues are interlaced with the various forms of power relations, such as sex/gender, sexuality, race, disability, and capitalism and political ecology.
