It teaches the conceptual framework students need to acquire to follow more advanced courses in asset pricing, financial intermediation, and corporate finance. Beyond teaching concepts of finance theory, the course also focuses on the most significant results of the empirical literature, testing elements of the theory. In particular, the course discusses the foundations of asset pricing theories, the implications of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, as well as the foundations of asymmetric information theories and empirical results on the impact of information asymmetry between investors and managers for the value of the firm.
