Aim & Background

This course is designed for students preparing for a first encounter with ethnographic fieldwork as well as for those who have already had some experience in this medium of inquiry. It introduces the process of ethnographic research and its principal methods for conducting fieldwork in socio-cultural anthropology and neighboring disciplines. It offers a general introduction to what fieldwork is, covering the entire process from preparation and entry to the field, through participant observation, the use of field diaries, interviews, audio-visual materials, and the first stages of analysis and writing ethnography.Constructed as an interactive and collaborative learning process in and outside of the classroom, the course aims to familiarize students with the ethnographic research through a combination of lectures, discussions of readings, methodological trainings, and practical exercises. The first classes feature an introduction to the history and practice of ethnographic fieldwork, followed by discussions of readings and field exercises on various ethnographic methods, and finally the writing up of a mini-ethnography, where you will bring together all of the ethnographic data collected during the course.
