Countries located along the EU's periphery - both within and outside the Union - possess significant potential for economic, social, and human development. At the same time, they face persistent challenges stemming from structural inequalities, labor market vulnerabilities, migration pressures, and evolving national and geopolitical security concerns. This seminar explores how economic transformation, labor mobility, and demographic change intersect with broader cohesion and integration goals in Europe's emerging border regions. Drawing on comparative case studies, the course analyzes barriers to development and social inclusion, as well as the risks and opportunities posed by cross-border migration, workforce transitions, and regional disparities.By linking these European experiences to global debates on development, integration, and security, the seminar offers a rich learning opportunity for students of public policy, economics, international relations, migration studies, and development and labor studies - whether they focus on Europe or other parts of the world facing similar challenges.Part of Development specialization for MAPP and MPAPart of the Policy track courses for MAIPA
