Aim & Background

"Economics of Inequality" examines economic inequality through the combined lenses of economics, political philosophy, and the philosophy of science. The course asks what we mean when we measure inequality, how economic institutions shape its evolution, and how normative concepts such as justice, freedom, and redistribution enter empirical research and policy debates. Rather than treating inequality as a purely technical issue, the course situates it within broader questions about markets, power, social mobility, housing, taxation, and the production of knowledge. Students will critically engage with both theoretical arguments and empirical evidence, and will examine how scientific measurement shapes public understanding and political action. By the end of the course, students will have developed a structured and analytically rigorous understanding of economic inequality, its conceptual foundations, and its policy implications.
