https://at-ceu.studyguide.timeedit.net/modules/DOPP5435?type=COREThe course Democratic Institutional Design introduces students to the core literature and arguments related to political institutions and processes, including questions about the concept and workings of liberal democracies, different types of political regimes, the trade-off or dilemmas democracy entails, and some of the problems of contemporary liberal democracies. Within the framework of the course we will look into the role and evolution of political parties, electoral and party systems. The second part of the course will assess the relationship between democracy, governance and public policy, including the effects of globalization and the dynamics of populism and democratic backsliding. Much of the empirical material and the underlying theories is centered on Western democracies, however, during the discussions we will try to draw parallels and expand the implications to additional set of countries.
