During the second half of the twentieth century,disciplinarily the study of security was dominated by mostly positivist, state-and military-centric approaches manifest in the particularities of so-calledStrategic Studies. During the last 30 years or so, however, the field has undergonea series of significant ontological and epistemological shifts. Whilemaintaining a traditional Strategic Studies core, a now-expanded 'SecurityStudies' reflects/constitutes a diversity of dimensions and referents; from theecological to the economic, from the individual to the global. Moreover, thefield also exhibits certain manifestations of IR's wider turn to constructivistand poststructuralist approaches thus adding conceptual complexities to itswider empirical reaches. This course reflects a number of these disciplinarydevelopments, concentrating primarily on questions of cultures, identities,emotions, voice, agency, ethics and emancipation. While by no meanscomprehensive, these areas are together intended to provide an appreciation ofmany of the major approaches and debates.
