Aim & Background

The Creative Writing Workshop is designed to teach students the techniques and devices to create narratives, characters and poetic expression for diverse type of genres and purposes. Fostering creativity assists in demonstrating understanding and learning new ways to present academic content in a variety of ways and subject areas. Creative thinking and expression do not "happen" in a vacuum, and this course intends to build an academic community where creative ideas can be shared, validated and reflected upon, in order to foster greater confidence in creating academic content that is more engaging, relevant, and playful. The course will introduce students to the writing of fiction, poetry and other genres. Students will study published works in various media, produce writing in a variety of forms and genres, share their work with others, and receive feedback that helps them improve their craft. The course intends to create a dynamic space of experimentation, discussion, where a dialogue will be established with published work in order to develop a fertile ground for creative response.
