Course

Aim & Background

This is a survey course in topics of ancient philosophy, some preliminary acquaintance with these issues is presupposed. The overall aim is to situate the investigation into nature, an ongoing quest of ancient philosophers, in relation to different intellectual endeavors, chief among them explanations in terms of numbers, ratios, proportions on the one hand, and spatial configurations on the other. The interconnected development of these fields will be in the focus of the course, from the inception of early Greek thinkers (a.k.a. the Presocratics) all the way to the much more intricate accounts in Plato, Aristotle and the Hellenistic schools.
