The course combines historical overviews of key developments from the 19th century and their ramifications and legacies into the 20th century and the present with closer looks at key aspects that made Austrian society and culture, specifically in the post-war period, including migration, popular culture, women's and labour movements, and discourses over national identity. The course combines lectures, delivered for the most part by guest lecturers who are experts in their respective fields with activities such as a visit to the 'Haus der Geschichte Österreichs' (the museum of contemporary Austrian history) to study how the country's history is presented to the public, and a film screening of 'Edelweiss', a recent documentary on the experiences of people of colour in Austria. Additionally, students are encouraged to attend planned walking tours focused on different aspects of history in Vienna.
