https://at-ceu.studyguide.timeedit.net/modules/ENVS5095?type=COREThe course will introduce students to vulnerabilityand adaptation studies, including concepts, tools and methods of vulnerability,adaptation and resilience analysis, and management approaches developed withadvances in adaptation science in mind. The course will build on the theory ofcoupled socio-ecological systems (SES) characterized by high levels ofcomplexity and uncertainty, including those associated with human activitiesand responses. It will draw on examples from climate change adaptation case studiesand practices, but its scope is broader, and examples from other sectors involvingthe stress, breakdown and reorganization of SES will also be covered. Theimportance of context in understanding and adaptively responding to slow-onsetand rapid stress will be discussed for a variety of SES, including but notlimited to forests, agroecosystems, human health / cities, and riverbasins. Mechanismssuch as national adaptation plans (NAPs) and climate risk insurance will beintroduced. The course will also include a review of adaptation relatedresearch and capacity building activities of a global adaptation network.
