Aim & Background

The aim of this course is to help students develop as writers within the academic community by raising awareness of, practising, and reflecting upon the conventions of written texts. As well as an introduction to critical thinking and critique writing, the course will also develop students' awareness of conventions of research-based academic writing, both regarding structural elements such as the introduction, literature review and conclusion, and how to use the work of other authors appropriately in their work. Students will also have the chance to reflect on how these conventions influence the development of their own voice. This course will focus on critical writing as well as source use and micro and macro-level argumentation for term papers. Towards the end of term, we will also consider the thesis writing process, helping students develop and present a thesis topic, situate their research within existing theoretical and topical scholarships, and prepare for the final stages of thesis research and writing. During the course, students will:Enhance the skills and strategies related to critique and research-based writing.Acquire an awareness of and ability to use effectively the discourse patterns of academic English.Improve their critical reading skills and strategies.Have the opportunity to develop their writing process through generating ideas, drafting, peer evaluation and individual writing consultations.Learn to take into consideration the expectations of their readership with regard to academic English discourse conventions.Learn to incorporate the work of other authors into their own writing within the requirements of English academic practice.Develop their revising and editing skills.Learn to generate and present research ideas.Learn how to develop their thesis ideas.
