Aim & Background

The aim of this course is to help you strengthen your position as a writer within the academic community by raising awareness of, practicing, and reflecting upon conventions of written texts. The course will also address strategies needed for graduate level work. During the course, you will become more familiar with features of various academic and non-academic texts, as well as the discourse patterns and conventions typical for them, effectively considering the expectations of your readership. Along the way you will have the opportunity to improve your own writing process through drafting, peer evaluation and individual writing consultations. You will also learn the nuances of incorporating the work of other authors into your own writing in line with the requirements and ethics of academic practice. Ultimately, you will become a more informed writer, one able to analyze others' writing, and more aware of the choices available to you when approaching any given writing task.
